Methodology
The notes are intended to facilitate interpretation of the
statistical data in Parts I, II and III of this publication.
Indicators generally follow standard definitions and
cover the years from 2000 to 2021 or the most recent
year, depending on the availability of data. Data are
obtained from various international sources such as
International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, the
United Nations and its specialized agencies. These
sources are supplemented with data obtained from
regional member countries and estimates made by
the ADB Statistics Department.
The data are comparable to the extent that the individual
countries follow the standard international concepts,
definitions and estimation methods recommended by
the United Nations and other international agencies.
However, statistical practices may vary from one
country to another with regard to data coverage,
concepts, definitions and classifications used. The
data shown therein may, therefore, not be directly
comparable, despite efforts made at the international
level to minimize differences. Nevertheless, the data
provide indications on trends and structures that
allow for the identification of significant differences
between countries.
The indicators in this publication are given in terms of
levels, growth rates, shares, and ratios.
To allow comparisons between countries, the values
of many national series were converted from national
currencies into dollars.
Technical information on the data is provided in the
Explanatory Notes below.
